Practice makes perfect. Pokerstars will always let you know when it is your turn to act. Just remember its play money and so it doesn’t matter if you lose it. Just keep playing and you will get it. There are numerous poker books available too, just go to a bookstore or library and browse one that lays out the general principles of playing. Negreanu’s books definitely cater more to people who have table experience.
Main thing is to not let them entice you into betting for real money, no matter how much you may win at the learning table. The more you play, the more you learn about what you mention needing to know, like betting, calling, raising or dropping. You eventually “get a feel” for the game and then you are close to be able to use real money, but not for a long time at the free tables first. Good luck.

Play for free until you are consistenly winning playing at the higher free play levels on Pokerstars, but keep in mind this is not the same as playing even for pennies in online cash games.

Practise doesn’t make perfect in poker. You are playing against other players and unless you know and can predict constantly the way they are going to play each hand, you just aren’t going to win every time.
A book series that I personally found very helpful is the one from Dan Harrington, he has a set on tournament play and one for cash games.

You could try some tournaments as well. Some players are just better at tournaments and some are better at cash games. You will have to find out which you prefer.
One more possibility: take online poker courses. You learn the basics and they even give you a bonus when you’ve finished the course- often after giving a quiz or something. This is a great way to get your free starting capitol to try out and practise what you’ve learned in the courses.

I actually got my first poker lessons from Phil Hellmuth’s DVDs a number of years ago. It was very solid basic strategy. I would look into them, or any of his books.
Also, I recommend putting a REAL deposit into a poker site and playing the small stakes tables. You would be amazed how the level of skill increases when the blinds are 1c and 2c as opposed to play money. I would advise dropping 50 dollars or so into any poker site and sitting down at the lowest limit tables with 2-3 dollars at a time.
